Gout Alkalization of urine. Effects leading to prevention of gout

The research group at Tottori University announced that mozuku and fucoidan extracted from mozuku proved useful for the alkalization of urine in hypertension patients, at the 42nd General Assembly of the "Japanese Society of Gout and Nucleic Acid Metabolism" held on Feb. 19-20, 2009, at the Keio Plaza Hotel. 1)

The following is a summary of their research.

Confirmed the action of fucoidan raising urine pH

Urine is produced in the kidneys and discharged outside the body as liquid waste.

Urine has the function to discharge waste from the body while adjusting osmotic pressure within the body.

The pH of human urine normally remains within a certain range, and urine less than pH 6.0 is called acidic urine.

Metabolic syndrome patients complicating with hypertension, gout [1], hyperuricemia [2], hyperlipidemia [3], abnormal glucose tolerance [4], and obesity, have acidic urine.

Due to the acidity of body fluids in patients, uric acid hardly dissolves in urine and is stored in the body, and uric acid value increases to be hyperuricemia, and the risk of gout attack increases.

Risk also increase for renal dysfunction, such as urolithiasis [5]and proteinuria [6].

Fig

In order to examine whether or not fucoidan has effects on improving acidic urine, we carried out pH tests on 11 hypertension patients who had consented.

During the test period they stopped taking any seaweed, and measured pH of urine by themselves at the time of awakening, before lunch, and before dinner.

For the first week they did not ingest fucoidan, and for the next one week they ingested fucoidan.

We checked pH of urine, blood test and urine test, 3 times a day and observed that the pH’s increased, indicating that urine became alkaline. (Fig)

Also it was observed that pH of urine shifted to alkalinity even in the case in which they took mozuku once a day.

After ingestion of fucoidan a decreasing tendency was observed in the Serum uric acid level, Discharge ratio of uric acid in urine, Uric acid, and Creatinine clearance [7].

More useful in combination use of the urine alkalizer

There are cases in which patients with acidic urine take sodium/potassium citrate preparations as medical agents to shift urine to alkalinity.

We compared effects of citric acid preparations with fucoidan.

It was confirmed that fucoidan had equal or stronger effects compared to citric acid preparations.

By taking fucoidan after ingestion of sodium/potassium citrate, it was shown that urine pH shifted further to alkalinity.

It was learned that alkalization activity of urine by fucoidan is independent from the activity of sodium/potassium citrate preparations.

These results show that fucoidan is effective in improving acidic urine levels.

Glossary

[1]Gout/Disease caused by arthritis due to Hyperuricemia etc. with accompanying pain. Elevated levels of uric acid in the blood cause crystallization and the crystals to attach to joint areas. The immune system misidentifies them as foreign material and attacks them, causing acute pain.

[2]Hyperuricemia/Situation and symptom of abnormally high concentration of uric acid in the blood. Generally, a patient is diagnosed with Hyperuricemia when concentration of uric acid in blood exceeds 7.0mg/dL.

[3]Hyperlipidemia/Recently called dyslipidemia. In cases where lipid levels in blood are abnormally high, it is mainly called Hyperlipidemia.
In case of excess or shortage of lipid, it is called Dyslipidemia.

[4]Abnormal glucose tolerance/The results of Oral glucose tolerance tests belonging to neither normal nor diabetes form, is likely to develop diabetes.

[5]Urolithiasis/Crystallized stone formed in the urinary system or the symptom in which the system is blocked by a stone. Depending on the area of where the stone is formed, it is called kidney stone, ureter stone, bladder stone and the like.

[6]Proteinuria/Urine detected protein which is not detected normally.
It is used as one of the indicators for inspection of disease.
However it may not be due to a disease, depending on physical activity or body position.

[7]Creatinine clearance/Inspection of serum to estimate function of the kidney calculating capability of kidney to discharge waste products in the body. Usually abbreviated as Ccr.
Creatinine is produced as a metabolic product from the muscle, sent to the kidney, and then discharged in urine. In examinations, it is mostly abbreviated as Cr, CRE, CREA.
Clearance shows the discharge capability of the kidney and etc.
